چکیده

Topically applied salicylic acid has enjoyed long and extensive usage as an agent to enhance desquamation in various hyperkeratotic skin diseases. In some of these disorders much of the skin surface may be affected, resulting in the potential for significant percutaneous absorption of the drug. We describe a patient who gradually developed evidence of severe salicylate toxicity while being treated with topical salicylic acid. Consequent on a recent letter in the BM71 this report serves as a reminder of a problem which, although recognised,2 may be unfamiliar to the current generation of dermatologists. It also shows strikingly the systemic absorption that may result from compounds applied to the skin.

A review of toxicity from topical salicylic acid preparations.

Topical salicylic acid is often used in dermatologic conditions because of its keratolytic, bacteriostatic, fungicidal, and photoprotective properties. The bioavailability of salicylic acid differs depending on the vehicle used and pH of transcellular fluids. Although rare, salicylic acid toxicity (salicylism) can occur from topical application. Physicians should be mindful of the potential for...

Systemic Absorption of Topically Applied Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid was applied topically to the skin of rabbits and humans in order to study the pharmacokinetics of percutaneous absorption, and the effects of formulation and application variables on the rate and extent of absorption. Drug samples incorporated into hydrophilic ointment (USP} and hydrophilic ointment containing 10% urea, were applied to the shaved abdominal areas of female New Zea...

Phosphonoacetic acid in the treatment of experimental ocular herpes simplex infections.

Phosphonoacetic acid had a significant antiviral effect when applied topically, both in liquid and ointment preparations, on superficial herpetic keratitis in rabbits and was equally as effective as idoxuridine. It was also effective in the treatment of idoxuridine-resistant herpetic keratitis. Phosphonoacetic acid was not effective in the treatment of experimental herpetic iritis when applied ...

Salicylic Acid Mitigates the Effects of Drought and Salinity on Nutrient and Dry Matter Accumulation of Linseed

Salicylic acid can mitigate the impacts of salinity and drought stresses in crops. To study the effect of salicylic acid under iso-osmotic drought and salt stresses on nutrients absorption and growth of linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.), an experiment was conducted based on a completely randomized design with three replications in Yasouj University in 2016. Treatments included salinity and droug...

Salicylic Acid Alleviates the Copper Toxicity in Zinnia elegans

Salicylic acid (SA) plays a key role in plant disease resistance and hyper-sensitive cell death but is also implicated in hardening responses to abiotic stress. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of salicylic acid on the growth, eco-physiological and biochemical characteristics in Zinnia elegans plant exposed to copper stress. Effects of copper (Cu) on biomass, root length and shoo...
